Warren Skaaren Environmental Learning Center at Westcave Preserve

LOCATION Austin, Texas
AREA 4,000 sf
COST $1,500,000
ARCHITECT Robert Jackson Architects
This learning center sets the standard for environmentally sensitive building construction. The building itself is an integral component of the educational installation, and it provides valuable lessons in sustainable design through conscientious detailing and selection of materials. The primary roof structure is composed of efficient, open steel trusses bearing lightly on stone pilasters to create a continuous clerestory at the perimeter. The building is a successful combination of modern design and sustainable practice.
"Its most prominent architectural feature is a broad, arcing roof that suggests the dome of the sky,...[and] takes on an additional significance when visitors step inside to view the celestial observatory integrated with the interior."

Stephen Sharpe, Editor, Texas Architect, 11/12 2003
