World Birding Center Headquarters at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park

LOCATION Mission, Texas
AREA 4,000 sf
COST $1,500,000
ARCHITECT Lake Flato Architects
The Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, Texas is
the site of the World Birding Center Headquarters. The honest
buildings and viewing structures defer to the flora and fauna of the
park. Simple, corrugated steel arches serve as the building structure, roof,
and ceiling while also channeling rainwater for sustainable harvesting.
"The metal roofs extend to shelter deep outdoor hallways, where rustic
benches offer ample opportunities for lingering observations of wildlife activity
in the pocket gardens."

Karen Hastings, Texas Architect, 5/6 2006
